Typhoon Sendong

A ruined community in Iligan.

I found another way to send in-kind donations to the Iligan victims thanks to tumblr user inagarcia. I’m a proud Kagay-anon and I love my city, but I also care about our neighboring towns and provinces. Get well soon Iligan my silingan, mmkay?

If you want to give love this Christmas season to the Sendong victims of Iligan City, you can use JRS, which will ship for free. JRS may be preferable over LBC because it will send to a specific address/person. Send your donations to this address:

Donations for Typhoon Sendong Victims
c/o Erika Rae M. Cruz
City Public Plaza Relief Center
Brgy. Poblacion, Iligan City
9200 Philippines

Have this address printed on a sheet of paper and place it in your donation box.

Note that this is just one way to send gifts to our kababayans. Here are 15 more ways to help Sendong victims.

Thank you and have a merry Christmas.

No Home. No Water. Death All Over. Typhoon Sendong Aftermath

Bagyong Sendong

Dead, cold, stiff bodies of flood victims.

Typhoons, flash floods, home destruction. These are things I only see on TV, on the news. But on the night of Friday, December 16, 2011, Cagayan de Oro, my hometown, felt the wrath of nature and experienced the worst flash flood in the city’s history.

The city was unprepared. Areas we never thought would be flooded were wiped out. More than 700 (and counting) have been found dead, 500 of which were found in Cagayan de Oro.

Clean water is scarce. Most of the water supply pipes burst into smithereens, leaving the water reservoir infected and the delivery pipes conked out and defective. We’re all forced to ration water and buy expensive bottled water to survive.

Bagyong Sendong

An entire community of about 400 houses in Sitio Kala-kala, Macasandig was completely wiped out.

Many neighborhoods don’t have electricity. Several electricity posts got knocked down by nightmarishly strong winds.

Those who were left homeless have no food to eat. With only an evacuation center above their heads, they practically have no shelter.

The worst part? Christmas is six days away. Would you expect Cagayan de Oro residents to have the heart to celebrate the season? Who could think of celebrating when fellow residents are mourning and an entire city is in shock?

Neighboring cities and provinces (Iligan, Bukidnon, Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Negros Oriental) were also wrecked as they were also in typhoon Sendong’s path.

Here are more photos of the aftermath. Don’t scroll any further if you have a faint heart.

A house drifted. The current was that strong.

Bagyong Sendong

An entire community carpeted by a very thick layer of mud water.

Bagyong Sendong

A very tired dog was fighting sleepiness, dozing off but fighting very hard not to fall to the dirty, muddy floor.

Bagyong Sendong

Houses were completely submerged. Trash swept away by the flood current ended up on the roofs of houses.

Bagyong Sendong

In Iligan City, cars got reduced to scrap. The heavy flood stacked them on top of each other.

Bagyong Sendong

In Gusa, Cagayan de Oro, a neighborhood is now a site of house ruins, trash, and layers of mud.

Bagyong Sendong

A street filled with houses used to line this area. Only one house remained, the only house made of concrete.

Adventure time

C’mon grab your friends

We’ll go to very

Distant lands

With Jay the human

and Jill the human as well

The fun never ends

It’s Adventure Time

Remember I said that I really love Adventure Time? Well, I REALLY love Adventure Time, so much that I want to be a part of that world.

And I don’t care what species I’ll be – human, candy people, penguin, even a lumper. I want my closest friends to join me, too. So Jay will be my partner in fighting evil and saving lives, and the show will be called Adventure Time with Jill and Jay. Mathematical!

Gillian Abonitalla

Aside from Jay, I also took my friends Rosie (aka RQ) and Mara with me. Rosie is a vampire because Marceline reminds me of her. They’re both bass players, awesome, and different from most girls. Mara is the princess of the Pastry kingdom because… she loves food LOLJK. She’s called Princess Muffin.

This drawing has some smudges from the scanning. I’ll get rid of them once I enhance them on Photoshop. I am yet to color this, btw.

Hullo!

It’s the middle of November and I haven’t posted anything this month yet. I know, I know. I’ve been busy, and a lot of problems came and hit me like a truck at full speed.

To make up for the absence, I offer you my new illustrations. :)

Gillian Abonitalla

This one is my birthday gift for my friend Maia. She LOVES Totoro. I made a caricature of her once. You can find it here: Maia.

Gillian Abonitalla

Totoro ends up in Bohol. I don’t know how he got there. He couldn’t have flown by plane, right? LOL This is another bday gift for Maia.

The next illustrations are sketchies I made by hand and taken using my crappy camera.

Gillian Abonitalla

I just really love Adventure Time. I wish I existed in that world instead of this. Sigh. So this is probably how I’d look like if I lived in Finn and Jake’s world as a human.

Gillian Abonitalla

I seriously want to learn how to dougie. And not just dougie, but dougie with swag. The one on the left is Jay and the other one is Maia (again). I’ve been meaning to make a Jay mini-me, but I keep losing my photos of her.

The Avengers Trailer Internet Release. Will You Watch the Movie?

Tags

Splosions, bad guys, and smoking hot Scarlett Johansson. Released Monday morning, The Avengers trailer looks to me like something that would turn anyone into a superhero movie fan.

The trailer opens with Loki saying, “You were made to be ruled.” Then comes a montage of shooting and chaos a la World War III.

And of course, there’s the usual “we need superheroes to save the world” speech, which is given by Nick Fury to bring the universe’s most powerful forces. Then an introduction of the members of the league (did I just say “league”?).

To top it all off, an NIN song was wailing in the background towards the end. THAT GAVE ME GOOSEBUMPS!

Thor is my personal favorite out of all the Avengers. I don’t know why. Maybe it has something to do with my Norse mythology fandom.

On the one hand, I’ve always been more of a DC fangirl, but don’t get me wrong. I’m pissing-my-pants-excited over the Avengers movie, and I love the rivalry between DC and Marvel because the resulting characters, comic books, and movies get more and more badass. So this is what I’m hoping for: DC retaliating with a live action Justice League flick! Or better yet, an adaptation of JLA/Avengers!

Haven’t Heard of The Avengers? Have You Been Living Under a Rock?

The Avengers Trailer

source: gamersbuzz.com

Don’t give a rat’s ass what I’m talking about? Have you been living inside a cave? Or are you from the darkest, remotest corner of the galaxy? Well, just imagine all the greatest superheroes of the past couple of decades – minus Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the Justice League of America (which is kind of unthinkable) – all rolled into one action-packed movie. If you haven’t heard of Justice League, you have got to be kidding me.

Sure, it’s another superhero film with shooting lasers and forces trying to destroy the Earth (seriously, how many forces out there want to destroy our world?). The entire movie itself seems to have come out straight from a comic book. But this is something anyone with good taste in thrilling movies wouldn’t want to miss.

If you’re definition of ‘good taste in movies’ is searching for long-forgotten films no one has ever heard of, then I don’t care. This is what I think. And you’re probably a pretentious hipster I wouldn’t want to talk to.

So anyhow, The Avengers comes out in theaters May 4, 2012. Why do they make us wait so long??

Conclusion

Maynard James Keenan DrawingAfter thinking about weighty matters yesterday and today, I have come to this conclusion: my Maynard portrait doesn’t look anything like him.

That is all.

I shall curl up and die now.

Maybe. I’m not sure. You be the judge.

Maynard James Keenan Drawing

by Gillian

I can’t be a legend. I’m not dead. -Maynard James Keenan.

I’d post an extracted jpg file, but I want to get your opinion before I make a final copy. Where do I need to improve? Is the shadowing okay? Does it really look like Maynard or am I just imagining it’s him?

Gah! I don’t know what to think. Maybe it’s the nose.

Dear Haruki Murakami, Please Use This Illustration As Your Next Book Cover

This is Mara.

It doesn’t look like her.

But the semblance doesn’t… mattuh.

LOL. I can’t find a fitting word that rhymes with Mara.

So I stalked Mara’s FB profile pics and stole one of her photos to make a portrait. I feared she might not like it. Turns out she does even if it doesn’t look anything like her. And no, I’m not a creepy stalker. Mara is a close friend of mine.

Meakong gidrawing imung face… (I drew your face) heheheheh. pero (but) you might not like the result.

Mara: WOW it’s nice pero (but) is it really me?? hahah

It looks like a book cover. I’d say for a book called Mara’s Letter to Sam or Memoirs of a Content Writer. Or better yet, maybe it can be the book cover of the next Murakami novel! Oh god of my idolatry Haruki Murakami, please accept my offering and grant me your mad writing talent.

I think this illustration can still be improved. I’ll splash a bunch of colors all over Mara’s face.
